Chris Bosh

By: Gregory Dole

Chris Bosh is now a well-known figure on the Canadian sports map. He is the face of the Toronto Raptors NBA franchise. Bosh came into the NBA in 2003, the same year as LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwayne Wade. While those guys might grab most of the headlines, Bosh has quietly and consistently become one of the NBA’s best and brightest stars. As of the time of writing this article, he is averaging 20.5 points and 12.2 rebounds per game.

In a time when many American basketball players have demonstrated a lack of interest in playing basketball north of the US border, Chris Bosh recently signed on in Toronto for another 3 years with the option for a fourth year as well. Of course, he was given about 65 million dollars and reasons to stay in Toronto. Nonetheless, Bosh has demonstrated great loyalty and commitment to the Toronto Raptors team and its fans. The laid-back basketball superstar recently made time to sit down with UMM and discuss the finer points of life in Canada, among other things.

Do you enjoy life in Toronto?

Oh yeah. It is a great city. I love being here. There is so much to see and do.

And the ladies?

Yep. There are lots of attractive ladies in Toronto. The city is good like that.

Do you have any favourite spots in Toronto? Any restaurants or bars you can recommend?

Honestly, I have not been to a bad restaurant during my time in Toronto. I love them all. The nightlife is great as well. There are so many great spots.

Have you been anywhere else in Canada?

I have been through southern Ontario, places like London, Kitchener and Waterloo.  But I haven’t seen much in Canada. It is a big country after all. With the NBA travel schedule, we don’t get much time off.

Do you have any advice to up and coming Canadian hoopsters?

Work hard. Dedicate yourself to training and improving your skills as much as you can. Go to basketball camps and play against the best level of talent. But don’t forget about school. Keep your grades up so that you can get to college and continue your dream of playing basketball. You need both basketball skills and school marks to get from high school to the next level (NCAA college basketball).

Has your time in Canada made you a Tim Horton’s fan?

Oh yeah. I am all about Tim Horton’s. It is a great place. Good coffee and some tasty treats.

Do you think Tim Horton’s would work in your hometown of Dallas?

Oh yeah. It would work in the USA. It is a good business.

Do you follow other Toronto sports teams?

A little bit.

Who is your favourite Toronto Maple Leaf?

Well, I will have to say Mats Sundin.

And your favourite Toronto Blue Jay?

Well, I don’t really have one, but I will have to support my fellow Texan Vernon Wells.

And your favourite Toronto Argonaut?

(Silence. And a long stare.)

No love for fellow Texan and Argonauts running back Ricky Williams?

(So much silence you could hear a pin drop. And even longer stare. I began to wonder if Chris had forgotten how to speak.)

Alright then. Any similarities between Toronto and Texas?

What do you miss most about Texas?

My family and friends.

Any little known facts about you?

No little known facts. It is all pretty much there to see.

Let’s go through some quick questions to get a better idea of who you are off the court. Which celebrity would you most like to meet and why?

Halle Berry. Do I need to explain?

Which celebrity would you most like to date?

The actress Sanaa Lathan from the movie “Love and Basketball”. She is something…

Do you have any interest in acting?

No chance. I am too tall besides.

What is your favourite movie? And what is your favourite movie genre?

Devil’s Advocate. I am a big fan of those psychological thrillers. The type of films that have twists and turns where the endings come out of nowhere, where you say “ooh I did not see that coming”.

Favourite singer/musician?

R. Kelly

Favourite style of music?

Rap and R&B.

No love for country music? I thought that was a Texas thing.

Umm. No, not for me at least.

Favourite car?

I will go with something country on this one. I like the F350 supercab. Those big trucks are nice.

Favourite meal?

No questions here. When I can get it, I like pork chops, rice and black-eyed peas.

Favourite clothing?

Anything custom. For my size, it is the only way to go.

Favourite basketball shoe of all-time?

The best shoe of all-time is the Nike flight 2001.

Favourite vacation spot?

Dallas. It is my home. That is where I go whenever I have holidays.

Favourite sport besides basketball?

American football. I love it.

Favourite thing to do for entertainment?

I love watching movies. My most recent favourite is the film Déjà Vu. Like I said, I like the films with interesting twists.

You recently spent the summer playing for the USA National Team at the Basketball World Championships in Japan. How was that experience?

It was great. I had a chance to play with the best and against the best. That is something every athlete and competitor wants to do.

Who was the best player you played against overseas – the best player in the world who is not in the NBA?

Without question, the best player not in the NBA is that big guy from Greece. They call him Baby Shaq. (Ed. Note: the guy’s name is Sofoklis Schortsanitis.)

Do you prefer the international game or the NBA?

The NBA without a doubt!

This year, the NBA switched the actual basketballs. Do you like the old ball or the new ball?

The old ball. Definitely. No question. I am very happy that the NBA commissioner decided to switch back to the old ball.

Well, that about does it. Thanks for making the time.

No problem. I am going to check out UMM when this comes out!

And with that, Chris left to watch some youth hockey game taking place that day at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. I couldn’t help notice that he stayed watching the kids play hockey for quite some time. Perhaps he really has taken to living in Canada. After all, is there anything more Canadian than being into Tim Horton’s coffee and minor league hockey?
